During the covid period, the net income of families in Telangana reduced to a significant level. This depreciation in the financial condition laid a massive impact on the education of students where many students shifted to government schools from private schools owing to the enormous fee structure of the latter.
According to the news, close to 1.25 lacs of private school students in Telangana shifted to government schools in 2021-2022. Generally, Telangana schools (private) teach in the English language, and owing to this considerable number of shifts, the government has decided to introduce the English language across state-run schools as the medium of learning.
Telangana was once a part of Andhra Pradesh got inspired by how the latter has made learning the English language compulsory from primary to high school. However, the educational board of Andhra Pradesh faced tons of boos from the public as they took it personally and thought that by doing so, the government schools were not paying attention or importance to the Telegu language.
On the contrary, the condition in Telangana is more stable and people are supporting this move. The Telangana government is yet to release the guidelines for this project that is going live in the academic year 2022-2023. This is definitely a good step that every educational institution in Telangana will be providing English language lessons for students but the news is not that exciting for the teachers in Telangana government schools.
We have spoken with English teachers in Telangana schools and they have explained the major reasons behind this condition. They said that gone are the days when teaching English was just all about grammar and literature. During their certification days in the TEFL course Hyderabad, they learned essential things about teaching English to students whose mother tongue is different.
English teachers have said that teaching English to the speakers of other languages is quite a heckle. They have to go for proper lesson planning to help students learn the English language efficiently. Many teachers in Telangana do not have that knowledge of how to teach English effectively to students, a majority of whose mother tongue is Telugu.

The Telangana government has decided that the medium of language in government schools will be both English and Telugu and it is solely upon the decision of parents which language they want their kids to study. Problems arise in rural areas where the availability of English teachers is not adequate in quantity.
On the bright side, English has been the medium of teaching for approx 3000 government schools. The Telangana State Academy of Knowledge and Skills (TASK) has entered into a partnership with the corporate sectors so as to provide the necessary knowledge to students before they graduate or pass out from any government educational institution.
Amidst all these facilities, Telangana teachers are not getting a sigh of relief. Usually, in government schools, teachers are appointed in two different grade school assistants and second-grade teachers. Their major responsibility is to teach various subjects to students in the Telugu language. While the government is planning to introduce the concept of giving education instruction in English, this decision is going to cost the livelihood of most of the government school teachers.
Teachers in Telangana government schools are not protesting this change but at the same time, they cannot be tension free as they do not have that much command of the English language. Well, though the government has stated that students can learn in either the languages English or Telugu, the scenario is known to all.
Since 1.25 lacs of students have shifted from private to government schools after they have spent a considerable amount of time in private schools, they’re definitely going to choose the language they have studied before shifting, i.e., English. This states that the need for English teachers in government schools in Telangana will go skyrocketing or the existing teachers will have to learn how to teach in English.
